Texas Sheriff Sees ‘F**k Trump’ Sign On Man’s Truck, Offers A Better Idea Instead
A Texas woman is in jail after being tracked down by police for having a large “F**k Trump” decal on her truck.
Police in Fort Bend County, Texas, searched for the driver of a white pickup truck with a decal on the back window that read “F**k Trump and f**k you for voting for him” after reportedly receiving a number of complaints from local residents.
According to Mad World News, Sheriff Troy E. Nehls of the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office posted about the truck on his Facebook page, asking for anyone with information about the owner to come forward.
“I have received numerous calls regarding the offensive display on this truck as it is often seen along FM 359,” Nehls wrote in the post. “If you know who owns this truck or it is yours, I would like to discuss it with you. Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modification to it.”
The post stirred up controversy as some accused the police department of infringing on the car owner’s right to free speech.
“I voted for Trump,” one Facebook user commented. “F**k this sheriff. The first amendment applies to ALL Americans! I hope the truck owner sues the pants off of this clown. Using a badge to intimidate people of different political persuasions is a disgrace to the office he holds, and he should be removed.”
Others supported the sheriff.
“I’ve seen this truck, and I would pleased if the owner of this vehicle was prosecuted for disorderly conduct,” another user wrote. “My children saw this, and I was infuriated they were subjected to this offensive display.”
According to BuzzFeed, not long after the officer posted the photo on social media, the pickup truck’s owner, Karen Fonseca, was arrested on an outstanding warrant after being tracked down by police.
Fonseca was arrested for possession and use of a fake identification and was held in jail on $1,500 bail.
A spokeswoman for the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said that police received a tip “that there was an outstanding felony warrant” for the driver of the truck.
Before the driver’s arrest, Daily Mail reported that the ACLU of Texas tweeted to Sheriff Nehls, telling him that “you can’t prosecute speech just because it has the word “f**k” in it.” The tweet added that the owner of the truck “should feel free to contact [the ACLU].”
Sheriff Nehls cited Texas law regarding disorderly conduct when questioned on the legality of Fonseca’s display:
Sec. 42.01. DISORDERLY CONDUCT. (a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly:
(1) uses abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar language in a public place, and the language by its very utterance tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace;
(2) makes an offensive gesture or display in a public place, and the gesture or display tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace.
