Shocking Find Discovered Underneath Golf Course (Photos)
Most people never stumbled upon a hidden underground treasure, never mind finding one multiple times.
Yet luck seems to be on multi-billionaire, Missouri golf course and Bass Pro Shops owner Johnny Morris’ side.
In addition to being a money magnet, he also has a knack for randomly stumbling upon hidden caves, AWM reports.
Photos from 1993 show Morris and Jack Herschend climbing into a hidden cave they had just found near Morris’ golf course, according to the Top Of The Rock website.
A little while later, a National Geographic photographer told them they had discovered what looked like “an underground chapel.”
So when a 70-foot sinkhole running 40-feet deep randomly appeared on Morris’ golf course after heavy rainfall hit the Ozark region in 2015, it was probably an utter shock for Morris when he found out what was underneath.
While experts advised he simply fill the hole, Morris had other plans.
“A treasure hunt is underway, and we hope to one day discover a new natural wonder lying below,” said Morris. “It’s been an exciting few months here at Top of the Rock and we hope the best is yet to come.”
Using his own wealth, he sent in two backhoes to further explore what was underneath.
“Whether it’s just like a foxhole thing you have to crawl in or whether there’s big caverns, that’s the mystery, and that’s the exciting part of all of this,” explained Morris, according to AWM.
It probably felt like Christmas came early for Morris when they found a complex system of not just one, but multiple limestone caves lying underneath.
Morris says he believes the caves are connected to the ones he randomly found nearby 23 years ago.
Even more exciting, the newly discovered caves are so long they’re even mystifying geologists.
“I am very excited about our chances to find a great cavern, but whether we find a cave or not, the incredible formations we have already uncovered have made the effort worthwhile,” said Morris, according to Top of the Rock.
