Online Shopping Trends: How Americans Are Changing the Way They Buy

The way Americans shop has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade, with online retail growing from a convenience into a dominant force in the consumer economy.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, e-commerce sales in the United States reached $1.119 trillion in 2023, accounting for approximately 22 percent of total retail sales. That figure represented a sharp increase from just 5 percent in 2012.

The shift accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when stay-at-home orders pushed millions of consumers to try online shopping for the first time. Grocery delivery, curbside pickup, and same-day shipping became standard expectations rather than premium services.

Amazon remains the single largest online retailer in the country, capturing an estimated 37 to 40 percent of all U.S. e-commerce sales. Walmart, Target, and a growing number of direct-to-consumer brands have invested heavily in their own digital infrastructure to compete.

Mobile shopping has also surged. Research from Statista indicates that smartphones now account for roughly 60 percent of all e-commerce traffic and close to half of all online purchases. Retailers have responded by redesigning their websites and apps for mobile-first experiences.

The trend has not been without consequences. Brick-and-mortar stores in malls and shopping centers across the country have closed at record rates. Between 2018 and 2023, thousands of physical retail locations shuttered permanently, contributing to the so-called “retail apocalypse.”

Small businesses have adapted in different ways. Many have turned to platforms like Etsy, Shopify, and social media marketplaces to reach customers directly. Others have embraced a hybrid model, combining a physical storefront with an online presence.

Consumer expectations continue to evolve. Free shipping, easy returns, and fast delivery have become baseline requirements for most online shoppers, pushing retailers to invest in logistics and fulfillment infrastructure at unprecedented levels.
