Trump: Armed Clubgoers Could Have Stopped Orlando Shooting
Donald Trump was swift to condemn the June 12 shooting of 103 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was quick to add that more guns, not less, would have helped solve the problem.
“If you had some guns in that club the night that this took place, if you had guns on the other side, you wouldn’t have had the tragedy that you had,” Trump told CNN June 13, reports the New York Daily News. “If people in that room had guns with bullets flying in the opposite direction right at him… right at his head, you wouldn’t have had the same tragedy that you ended up having,” Trump continued.
The CNN anchor had told Trump that an off-duty officer was indeed at the club during the shooting, but Trump did not respond to the comment.
“If you had guns in that room, if you had – even if you had a number of people having them strapped to their ankle or strapped to their waist, where bullets could have flown in the other direction right at him, you wouldn’t have had the same kind of tragedy,” Trump added.
The CNN anchor then asked Trump if he was “comfortable” with people identified as known radicals by the FBI owning weapons.
“Well, in this case, he actually licensed, and – which is sort of an amazing thing,” Trump began. “He went out, he got licensed, he was fully licensed. So, he had the right to have a gun”.
In the wake of the shooting, Trump also reiterated his Muslim Ban.
“What has happened in Orlando is just the beginning,” Trump’s tweet, written on June 12, begins. “Our leadership is weak and ineffective. I called it and asked for the ban. Must be tough.”
