Trump: Clinton Should Disarm Bodyguards If She Is Anti-Gun
On May 20, Donald Trump spoke to a meeting of the NRA that drew 80,000 members. The event was staged to unite the Association in opposition to Hillary Clinton. The following day, Saturday, May 21, Clinton spoke to the Trayvon Martin Foundation’s third annual “Circle of Mothers” – a gathering of mothers who have lost children to gun violence.
“Unlike Donald Trump, I will not pander to the gun lobby, and we will not be silenced and we will not be intimidated,” Clinton told the group, reports CNN. “As long as children anywhere are being killed by gun violence, we will keep fighting for our kids, because they deserve a president who stands up for them and stands with the mothers here. Their lives are valuable.”
Clinton continued that Trump’s vision for America “isn’t just way out there, it’s dangerous.” And while Trump wants guns in schools, Clinton advocated that “parents, teachers and schools should have the right to keep guns out of classrooms, just like Donald Trump does at many of his hotels, by the way.”
“If you want to imagine what Trump’s America will look like, picture more kids at risk of violence and bigotry,” Clinton continued at the “Circle of Mothers” event. “Picture more anger and fear. Ask any of the mothers here tonight if they want to live in that kind of America. Enough is enough.”
Following the event, Trump shot back.
“Crooked Hillary said that I want guns brought into the school classroom. Wrong!” Trump began on his Twitter feed.
“Crooked Hillary wants to get rid of all guns and yet she is surrounded by bodyguards who are fully armed. No more guns to protect Hillary!” Trump continued, reports The Hill.
At the NRA event, Trump further railed against Clinton, calling her “the most anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment candidate ever to run for office.”
Trump then called for Clinton’s Secret Service detail to disarm. “Let’s see how they feel walking around without their guns and their bodyguards.”
Trump has repeatedly slammed Clinton for insisting she will ban all guns – an assertion that does not appear to check out with any evidence.
“I know we are a smart enough nation to figure out how you protect responsible gun owners’ rights and get guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them,” Clinton said in February, per The New York Times.
